The FY26 Brevard budget allocates citizen tax dollars to 'community partners' to support the city's progressive priorities: $198K to Endowing Fund 76 (Housing Trust Fund), $95K to Fund 83 (Downtown Master Plan), and $85K to Fund 78 (Multi-Use Pathway). Think of them as Brevard’s NGOs.
The Brevard Police Department currently has only eight officers out of the 18 needed to patrol the city. The Transylvania County Sheriff's Office has been contacted to handle the midnight shift.
The Brevard Police Department is being sued in federal court by the Police Benevolence Association and a former sergeant alleging retaliatory firing and missing evidence.
The City of Brevard's sewage treatment plant, located off Wilson Road, on the banks of the French Broad River, has a history of major wastewater spills. Between 2002 and 2013, there were 214 sewer overflows. The NC Department of Environmental Quality has taken enforcement action against the city more than 111 times since 2013. In 2015, over 1 million gallons of raw sewage were released into the environment. In 2023, 65,000 gallons were released, and 76,000 gallons in 2024.
Brevard city leadership increased spending by 10.3% in their FY26 budget. They raised property taxes by another 8.3% to fund it.
